WHAT WOOD YOU USE?

Elite Signs shows its talents…

The case of a client’s wishes and needs not quite being in keeping with the budget allocated to a job will be one that most signmakers are familiar with. Compromise, of some sort, is usually indicated unless there’s a willingness to dig a bit deeper but, on occasions, a bit of creative thinking can leap to the rescue too, as recently proven by Simon James and his team at Bridgend based Elite Signs and Graphics.

Elite’s client in this case was a gift shop based in West Wales’ Newquay, Ocean Blue. Ocean Blue came to Elite with ideas of weathered wood contrasting with its crisply rendered trading name over the top of the shop’s entrance and spanning the shop’s frontage. No problem as far as Elite was concerned. The quote for the work though raised a few pulses at the shop with the wood commanding a big slice of the cost.

It was obvious that the sign as originally conceived wasn’t going anywhere. Not least above the shop.

It didn’t take the Elite team too long to find a creative solution to address its client’s concerns though. Rather than fabricate the proposed wooden parts of the sign, Elite suggesting printing them.

Simon and team turned to a trusted partnership comprising Metamark’s MD5-A reference-quality media and its matching satin MG700 laminate, which it printed with EcoSol MAX inks using its Roland XC540. Using a reference sample of imaged wood, the printer was soon producing metres of very convincing looking wood-effect material, suitably toughened up with the highly resistant laminate.

Application of the printed  Metamark media onto the sign’s fabricated composite tray was made easier by the MD5-A’s MetaScape adhesive which simply doesn’t give trapped air a chance when it’s being used. Simon and the team have use the material on other occasions in the recent past and Simon commented,

“Even though we’re experienced applicators, the MD5-A does make the job of applying large areas much simpler and a lot faster.”

With some very sharp-looking cut acrylic lettering sat on stand-off locators upon the printed and applied background, the sign definitely rings the client’s bells in combining the wood effect with the sign’s other elements well. Thanks though to Elite, the whole production happened at an affordable price, and embodies a welcome bonus too – it won’t need staining or varnishing every few years.
